The rise and rise of the Internship

11 August 2010

Internship schemes have long been a superb way for students to gain experience and contacts to aid their way to work, however 2010 looks to be the tipping point as the Internship moves from nice to have to must have.

The Higher Education Statistics Unit recently published their latest finding which revealed 21.7% of students in employment after graduation had completed an Internship.

The benefits of internship schemes don't just reside with students. For graduate employers the opportunity to pre-screen candidates, judge their cultural fit and understanding of the workplace can vastly improve their chances of hiring the best graduates for the job.

Emily Farley, a recent student interviewed by the BBC, explained that internships seem to have replaced entry level jobs "with employers recruiting more and more from their Internship schemes there are hardly any jobs left by the time you graduate."

The message seems clear. A degree is no longer enough to land graduate jobs, you need to add a summer internship to your list of qualifications to maximise your chances.
