Students shun Jobs market for Gap Year that pays...

20 July 2010

A recent survey by High Fliers found that only 36% of students expected to land a job when they graduate this summer. Not surprisingly, many have started to look at the alternatives and taking a year off is proving particularly popular.

However, unlike previous years the focus is not just on fun and unique experiences but on gaining skills and improving employability. Students hope that by taking a year off and using it constructively they'll be able to re-enter the graduate jobs market not just at a better time but also better equipped to land their dream graduate scheme.

One of the most popular options that has emerged is teaching English abroad, commonly known as TEFL.

i-to-i, a leading trainer of TEFL teachers and provider of graduate jobs abroad, has seen a 22% increase in enquiries from students in the past 3 months alone. Talking about this recent trend, Gordon Mathie MD of i-to-i explained.

"I’m not surprised that teaching abroad is becoming more popular…there are amazing, paid opportunities all over the world for this year’s graduates, not just to experience another culture, but to gain skills that will make employers back home sit up and take notice."
