The Government Legal Service (GLS for short) is the collective name used to refer to the 2000 or so lawyers who work in the legal teams of approximately 30 Government organisations. Although the legal teams are organisationally separate, together they form the GLS. They range from vast departments of State such as the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice and large non-ministerial departments such as Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to organisations such as the Office of Fair Trading and regulatory bodies, for example, the Health and Safety Executive.
The GLS Legal Trainee Scheme offers you the chance to conduct your training contract or pupillage in one of the participating Government legal teams. The broad structure of a GLS training contract or pupillage is similar to that elsewhere. The nature of the work you will undertake during the training period and the level of responsibility you will be given is very different and beyond comparison.
